Africans, protagonists of Casa África´s parallel activities at Womad

11/11/2010

Starting yesterday and through Sunday, people who visit Womad in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria can become thoroughly familiar with the various aspects of the African continent thanks to the parallel activities organised by Casa África, and which were very well received during the first day of the festival. The best of current African cinematographies was presented yesterday at the Womad-Casa África film season, which takes place at the Elder Museum of Science and Technology. The first session, in which more than 150 people filled the auditorium, included the showing of the Kenyan-South African production titled Pumzi, a short science fiction film that describes an apocalyptic future in which nature dies. The film season will continue every afternoon during Womad, and tickerts (which are free) may be picked up as of 10:00 am at the Elder Museum.

The attendees of the first day of the festival were also able to catch an unusual glimpse of the neighbouring continent through Africa Focus. This activity takes place during the afternoons at Casa África´s stand, in which participants provide their opinion and launch an optimistic message about Africa while being filmed with a chroma and with one of twenty African videos as the setting. They may also vote in the stand itself for their favourite photos of the 1st Africa Focus Photography Contest through their Facebook profile.

The African Culinary Corner will also be open through Sunday.  It´s a social project for increasing awareness that trains a group of African women who reside in Gran Canaria with the mid-term objective of having them establish a social company that offers the public an African food catering service.
