Casa África's Nelson Mandela Auditorium held yesterday Thursday, 12th December, a round table on the phenomenon of maritime piracy on the African continent. The meeting sought to generate knowledge from different points of views on the recent evolution of piracy in Africa, initially concentrated in the Horn of Africa (Somalia), and which in recent years has found a new focus in the Gulf of Guinea.
The round table was organised by Casa Africa and had the cooperation of the Naval Command of the Canary Islands. Its head, Admiral Manuel de la Puente Mora Figueroa, took part in it to put across the Navy's view of the phenomenon and the Spanish participation in control and containment measures that are being implemented both through collaboration with African countries as well as with the international community.
During the round table, together with the Admiral was Fernando Ibáñez, an African piracy expert at the University of Zaragoza, the journalist from the Canary Islands, Angel Tristan Pimienta, and Casa África's Director General, Santiago Martinez-Caro, who acted as moderator.
Admission to the event was free and, for the first time, was broadcast by streaming.
