30/09/2010

Yesterday, the Instituto Español de Estudios Estratégicos (IEEE, Spanish Institute for Strategic Studies) and Casa África presented the publication titled European and African Response to the Problems of Security in Africa at the European Commission´s Representation headquarters in Spain. The event was presided by Luis Cuesta Civis, general secretary of Defence Policy, and the general director of Casa África, Ricardo Martínez Vázquez.

This publication, which has been prepared by a group of leading specialists with extensive experience related to the African continent, analyses the efforts in the area of peace and security that are being carried out by Africans as well as Europeans in the neighbouring continent. Coordinated by Antonio Núñez García-Sauco, it forms part of the objective to consolidate peace and security in Africa that is covered in the 2nd Africa Plan of the Government of Spain.

In this regard, Ricardo Martínez highlighted during the presentation the significant change that Spain has made in its foreign policy towards the African continent, assuming a focus and commitment that is different from that of other European nations. "In this manner, Spain aims to contribute towards providing African solutions for African issues, and this is the direction in which Casa África operates."

He also reminded the audience that one of Casa África´s objectives is to work closely with African institutions and societies in order to understand their interests and priorities, which is why three African contributors of recognised prestige were selected to participate in preparing this strategy notebook, which is available in Spanish and English.
