The Director General of Casa África appears before the Parliament of the Canary Islands

26/11/2015

This morning, Luis Padrón, Director General of Casa África, appeared before the committee for European Affairs and Foreign Policy of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, at the request of the Popular Party. After explaining the mission, operation and work of Casa África to the members of the Parliament, Luis Padrón explained the priorities of Casa África, outlined its programmes so far and gave an overview of its future path.

“After almost ten years and more than a thousand activities undertaken since launch, Casa África, as the only institution of the Spanish State whose activity focuses exclusively on Africa, has contributed greatly to improving the knowledge and perception of Africa in Spain and of Spain in Africa”, he said. “Undoubtedly, the presence of Casa África in the Canary Islands has given enormous visibility in recent years not only to Spain but also to the Canary Islands as a bridge to Africa.”

Padrón, who will have been at the helm of this institution for two years next January, said that the activities of Casa África have involved more than 10,000 African people and created an extensive network of contacts and excellent relations with African governments, embassies and pan-African and international institutions in Africa. He also said that Casa África has established itself as not only a national but an international reference in African issues, that it is especially known in West Africa and has contributed decisively to the configuration of the Canary Islands as a hub for logistics, and humanitarian and business services with regards to the African continent.

The Director General also responded to questions put to him after his speech by members of the Parliament from the different groups with a presence in the Regional Chamber. Casa África and the Parliament of the Canary Islands signed a cooperation agreement on 3 November.
