Djibril Tamsir Niane is a prestigious African historian, playwright and short story writer who was born in Conakry in 1932. After completing his secondary studies, in 1959 he earned a degree in History from the University of Bordeaux (France). He taught in his native city and at the Institut Polytechnique, among others.
He is currently a member of the international scientific committee for the Slave Route (a Unesco project), president of the African Society for Editing and Communication (Conakry) and of the Organisation for Memory and Heritage. He is also an honorary professor of Howard University (Washington D.C.) and the University of Tokyo. His titles include: Recherches sur l’empire du Mali (1959) and Histoire de l’Afrique occidentale (1961).
