#ÁfricaEsNoticia: Congo, una guerra en el paraíso

Among the activities planned for Africa Vive 2014, there is a Casa África initiative to celebrate Africa Day (25th May), on Thursday 22nd May  Casa África's headquarters will host three acts making up Noche África and reinforce the institution's ongoing work by bringing  Africa and Spain increasingly closer.

  • 7:00 p.m.: at seven in the evening in Casa África's Nelson Mandela Auditorium,  a new conference from the cycle # ÁfricaEsNoticia will take place. This time we will be spoken to about the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) by Alberto Rojas and Raquel Villaécija , journalists from El Mundo. They present the work for which they obtained a grant from the European Journalism Centre and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It is a series of reports on the DRC which will allow us to reflect and get to know the situation of one of the most troubled corners of the continent.
  • 21.00: After the conference has finished, Casa África's courtyard welcomes the presentation of the  "Africa and Spain, increasingly closer," Map a teaching tool developed by Casa África in collaboration with Binter to obtain an updated map of the continent.
  • This ceremony in Casa África's courtyard will be livened up with African music from DJ Ridoo and will open its doors to look at the newly opened exhibition of photographer Elise Fitte-Duval.

#ÁfricaEsNoticia is a specific programme from Casa África to bring debate and reflection on the hottest topics from Africa today to its headquarters in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It is a cycle of conferences on Africa today from Spanish and African experts which invite us to discuss, think and bring us even closer to Africa. The title also refers to Casa África's web section which is updated daily with the main news on the neighbouring continent.

Under the title of # ÁfricaEsNoticia, the theme chosen for the first conference was the conflict in the Sahel and now the limelight is focused on the Democratic Republic of Congo, where one of the most destructive wars in Africa is under way, not dealt with in the media very much and which has already resulted in more than 6 million dead, thousands of rapes and all kinds of atrocities and crimes against humanity. The bloody and terrible conflict, involving several countries in the region has a long history behind it, in contrast to the extraordinary beauty of the landscape and the desire for peace of a people living a hell in paradise.
