Casa África, as collaborator with the Tarifa/Tangier African Film Festival (FCAT), awards one prize each year for the best full length documentary, within the section called “Hipermetropía”.
To celebrate International Woman's Day, Casa África will facilitate the online projection of the documentary which won this award in 2019: Khartoum Offside , a work by the Sudanese producer Marwa Zein.
This film shows a group of exceptional young women from Khartoum who decide to play professional level football, despite this being forbidden by the Islamic military government of the country. In their fight for recognition of the national women's squad in Sudan, they ignore fear, showing great courage and tremendous tenacity. Despite the fact that the National Federation receives FIFA funds to be given to female teams, they are still discriminated. However, a small ray of hope has been lit up, as the elections within the Federation may give way to a change of heart.
The film can be seen online free of charge from Friday 12/03/2021 at 19.00h until Sunday 14/03/2021 at 23:30h. It will be shown via the On Demand African Cinema Video Channel in Spanish. We will shortly give instructions on how to access and watch it.
Casa África is supporting the best documentary within the FCAT because this is a genre currently being developed in Africa but, due to its very nature, is hard to finance. Sustaining African documentaries means sustaining didactic genres, very important for the fomenting of reading and for the historical review of the African continent. It is furthermore an educational tool, helping people to become aware of social matters relevant to Africa and to denounce them.
