Our mission is to bring Africa and Spain closer
Through outreach, educational, economic, and cultural activities, we foster mutual understanding and strengthen Hispanic African relations.
The First Spain-Africa Meeting of Journalists, which concluded yesterday in Madrid, was attended by 300 people. The meeting demanded an increased and improved presence of Africa in our media. 30 African and Spanish journalists participated in several roundtable discussions and presentations designed to build networks and promote the use of African sources and voices in the information about the continent.
This meeting of African specialised media, activists and journalists and Spanish reporters was held throughout yesterday at the Palacio de Cibeles, sponsored by Ria Money Transfer and with the collaboration of the EFE Agency, the Women's Foundation for Africa and the Madrid City Council. It involved more than 300 journalists, students, diplomats, representatives of the Third Sector and foundations interested in Africa.
Africa and news about Africa are of great and increasing interest in Spain. This is one of the main conclusions that more than 300 journalists, journalism students, communicators, diplomats and representatives of institutions and NGOs working with Africa extracted at the end of the day yesterday at the Palacio de Cibeles. The conclusion of two days of coexistence between African and Spanish journalists is clear: given that much of the Spanish public and an increasing number of journalists and media are interested in Africa, we need “more Africa” in the media and more African voices in the news we tell about their continent.
The need to take advantage of African voices and experts comes together in a demand from both sides: the integration of African journalists and reference to, and collaboration with, the African media in Spanish reporting. Yesterday, the meeting changed its focus to trends in social networking and generated debates, proposals and partnerships, reaffirming their willingness to continue in this line of work, supported on this occasion by Ria Money Transfer, Casa Árabe, the EFE Agency, the Women for Africa Foundation and the City Council of Madrid.
