Boubacar Boris Diop talked about his life, literature and his Africas in the African Film Festival of Tarifa (FCAT) context. Protagonist of the Casa África programme called African Letters, which has been running since January 2009 and that puts writers from the African continent in direct contact with Spanish readers, the author of Los tambores de la memoria gave a conference this Friday at the Galería Silos.
The intervention by Diop formed part of a wider activities programme range, designed by Casa África also with its own contents and that included a presentation on Casa África's role in the area of literature and cinema and another on the International African Book Fair (SILA) that hosts its third edition in September. The Senagalese author, who has recently had his book translated into Spanish by Casa África within its Literature Collection with the publishing company El Aleph/El Cobre, was accompanied by Casa África's director general, Ricardo Martínez, and the programme coordinator of African letters, Antonio Lozano.
Boubacar Boris Diop is a Senegalese (Dakar, 1946) novelist, essayist, playwright and screenwriter and is considered to be one of the most important writers currently in Africa. He is author of various novels, amongst which we must highlight Los tambores de la memoria (Ed. Harmattan, 1990), El caballero y su sombra (new edition, Philippe Rey, 2010), Murambi, el libro de los huesos (new edition, Zulma, 2011) and Kaveena (Ed. Philippe Rey, 2006). La mona y sus monitos is the French version of his novel Doomi Golo (Ed. Papyrus Dakar, 2003), originally written in wolof and translated by himself into French. His is co-author together with Odile Tobner and François Xavier Verschave of Negrofobia (Ed. Les Arènes, 2005) and author of the essay África más allá del espejo (Ed. Philippe Rey, 2007). He collaborated in 2008 with the collective work África contesta a Sarkozy.
